Folder Making

Make your own folder to store your documents and certificates.

Materials required

Cloth- printed or plain is your choice
Contrast colour cloth for borders
Cardboard
Glue
Thin foam sheet
Piece of welcro

Cut out two pieces of cardboard into rectangles of the size you want the folder to be. Stick foam on them and let it dry.

Cut two pieces of main colour cloth into size which is the combined size of the two cardboard pieces placed next to each other. Leave about 2 cms extra on each side. Also cut two smaller rectangle pieces for the lower pockets and two medium sized pieces for the upper pockets in the folder.

Arrange the pieces in the following way-
1) One big cloth piece of the rectangle shape
2) One cardboard piece with foam
3) Second cloth piece of rectangle shape
4) Medium size pocket piece
5) Small size pocket piece

Stitch these in the machine. Repeat for the other side as well. Stitch on all four sides once again. While stitching place the cardboard pieces at a gap of 1 cm. Stitch in the center also. Check if the folder is foldable and make necessary adjustments.

Cut long pieces of the contrast colour of 1 inch width and stitch it all over the sides as stitched while giving piping.

Cut two small rectangle piece of cloth in the main colour and stitch them on all sides leaving a little gap. Reverse the cloth using the gap and stitch a piece of welcro in one side and other piece of welcro on the front side of the folder. Attach this piece to the backside of the folder.

Printed cloth, old dupattas or sarees can be used to make attractive folders.

Wet on wet landscape painting

Fix an embrodiery ring to a white cloth. Wet a small piece of sponge and rub it on the cloth to make it slightly wet. Spread some white fabric colour in the center, light blue in the circle above it and dark blue in the final circle. Use a sponge to spread and mix these colours to get desired effect.

Use black or/and brown colour fabric paint to make boats, trees, birds, temples or houses on the background.

The entire painting takes hardly 10 minutes if you have a good hold over the brush. Let it dry well and iron from backside.

Pot Painting

This is a very simple art ready in 10 minutes. I have used a icecream plastic container for this. Stick some mirrors and use a glass painting outliner to create designs. Also serves as a good gift item.

Screen Printing

Readymade screens are available in the market. The simplest way to makes these is buy them and use fabric paint to get the desired print. The actual paint used in screen printing process involves a mixture of binder, colour and fixer.

Quick Tie and Dye Technique

All these are five min tie and dye techniques...

For the first one, fold a square piece of cloth diagonally once, then fold it into half and hold the center of the cloth. Open up the cloth continuing to hold the center. Now, use fabric colours and water to spread some two or three colours on the cloth in circular direction...that is the tip should be one colour, then leave some space and colour the next circular portion and so on. Finally, press the cloth with hand to spread out the colours. Now leave the center and open up the cloth. Leave it to dry and then iron from backside.

For the second one...fold a square piece of cloth like a fan. Then do the same on the other side as well. Now apply some colour in the center and other colour in two sides. Ensure that the colour reaches the inside of the cloth too. Press well to spread out the colour and then open. Dry and iron from backside.

For the third type..Mark a design and tie thread throughout holding the points on the design. Spread out the desired colour throughout and press well. The colours will be visible only on the places other than the thread. Dry and iron from backside.

Simple stroke painting

These paintings are done using simple stroke of dipping the brush in paint and pressing the same lightly on paper. Instead of turning the brush around, the paper is turned out to make equal impressions throughout. A round brush of size 6 or 8 would be ideal for this type of painting.

Painting on sculptures of gods and goddess

Small sculptures of different Gods in sandal colour are easily available in gift shops and outside temples. Try painting them with water colours/fabric colours to give it a new and unique look.
